GLST271, Community Engaged Learning: Gender Justice in Guatemala (3 credit hours)
In this three-week travel course, students will focus on gender issues in Latin America and the Guatemalan context in particular. They’ll become acquainted with a range of strategies being used to address gender issues in Guatemala, including economic development, religiously affiliated empowerment and legal and political efforts. These experiences will enable them to articulate their own understanding of gender and justice in their home cultures.

During a 3-week May term in Guatemala, learn first-hand about the persistent social problems facing Guatemala’s youth as well as the determination and resilience of committed young adults who are helping to meet those challenges and prepare the way for a better future. See our flyer.
Course Overview
What you can expect to see/learn/do. . .
- Live with your group members at CASAS at Semilla, the Latin American Anabaptist Seminary in Guatemala City.
- Learn through field trips, guest speakers, a weekend homestay, readings, journalling, personal reflection.
- Meet indigenous communities in Guatemala and learn about the ways that race, ethnicity, and class intersect with gender issues in diverse contexts.
- Carry out a service assignment in a cross-cultural context.
